Leading Robotics & AI Across Three Research Directions | Field Robotics

The HERON Center of Excellence is actively shaping the future of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, focusing on the development and application of advanced technologies across three research directions.

In the technology-focused news program Hi-Tech of Action 24, HERON Deputy Director Prof. Evangelos Papadopoulos  provided in-depth insights into Field Robotics.

HERON Deputy Director Prof. Evangelos Papadopoulos introduced the exciting advancements in Field Robotics, focusing on robots that operate outside traditional factory settings – on land, at sea, underwater, in the air, and even in space.

Field Robotics covers a wide range of applications:

  • Agriculture: Robots that take over some farming operations, supporting humans in agricultural works.
  • Drones: Aerial robots used for logistics, environmental & construction monitoring, and remote inspections.
  • Hazardous Environments: Robotic systems deployed in challenging locations, such as volcanic areas or dangerous industrial sites.
  • Logistics: Autonomous mobile robots improving efficiency in warehouses and supply chains.

Critical challenges in this direction include:

  • Robotic Intelligence: Enabling robots to make autonomous and adaptive decisions in complex environments.
  • Energy Autonomy: Extending battery life and charging capabilities to support longer missions.
  • Production Costs: Managing the high financial investment required for advanced robotic systems.

Prof. Papadopoulos emphasized that Greece has significant opportunities in this sector due to its natural landscapes, maritime environment, and extensive agricultural areas. By developing robotics solutions that address local needs, there is potential to expand internationally. Additionally, promoting Makerspaces and cultivating a maker mindset among young researchers and professionals can help design and produce robotic systems locally, gradually reducing manufacturing costs and strengthening domestic innovation.
