HERON and Athena RC at European Researchers Night

On September 26, 2025, HERON – Hellenic Robotics Center Of Excellence together with the Robotics Institute of Athena Research Center, participated in the European Researchers’ Night 2025 both in Athens and Xanthi.

Our team of researchers – Niki Efthymiou, Panagiotis Filntisis, Gabriel Ioannidis, Argyris Manetas, Paris Oikonomou, Panagiotis Roditis, Konstantinos Spathis, Katerina Papadimitriou, Stelios Zarifis and Director Petros Maragos at National Technical University of Athens in  Athens, and Lydia Gialama at Mediterranean Researchers’ Night – MEDNIGHT in Xanthi, welcomed visitors of all ages, guiding them through interactive demos and hands-on experiences.

At the event, visitors had the chance to:

  • Get informed about how robots use SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping)to create real-time maps of their environment, enabling accurate awareness and autonomous navigation,
  • Explore Reinforcement Learning, where robots gain knowledge by mimicking human learning processes through reward and penalty systems,
  • Discover Human–Robot Interaction (HRI), highlighting how robots are trained to recognize human emotions, gestures, and even Greek Sign Languagefor more natural and inclusive communication.
