Democracy and Artificial Intelligence – A Hidden Dimension
Emer. Prof. Sergios Theodoridis, Director of HERON education dpt., participated in the 20th International Conference of Nafplion in the panel discussion on AI and Democracy.
In his article – published in the newspaper Athens Voice, Sergios Theodoridis summarizes his presentation, explaining how AI weakens critical thinking, threatening citizens’ ability to form genuinely free opinions, while also undermining conscience and the very development of the ‘democratic citizen’.
In a climate of growing distrust toward the political system, a new trend emerges; younger generations increasingly place their confidence in AI, viewing algorithmic processes as sources of rational solutions that may bypass the flaws of the political establishment.
This shows the danger of a continuous decline in critical thinking and raises concern about how the surrender of personal autonomy ultimately might undermine democracy itself.
Sergios Theodoridis talked about how algorithmic substitutes cannot replace human empathy or emotional intelligence.
He highlighted the risk that individuals may be guided by simulated emotions, shaping their decisions without their awareness.
His presentation was very well received, cultivating a high level of audience engagement, strong interest, and multiple points of discussion.
The panel participations included A.I. D. Metaxas, E. Venizelos, S. Theodoridis, K. Lavdas, F. Panagopoulou, A. Papadopoulos, G. Panousis, K. Tsoukalas, and D. Charalambis.
